Editing Essay
“What make the movie the movie is the editing” - said by Zach Staenberg, editor of Bound and The Matrix Trilogy. Editing is one of the most importand part of the creative post-production process of filmmaking. The film editor works with the raw footage, selecting shots and combining them into sequences to create a finished motion picture. Film editing is described as an art or skill, the only art that is unique to cinema, separating filmmaking from other art forms that preceded it, although there are close parallels to the editing process in other art forms such as poetry and novel writing. Film editing is often referred to as the "invisible art” because when it is well-practiced, the viewer can become so engaged that he or she is not even aware of the editor's work. The invention of editing gave birth to the new word, and a new language, a language that can transported in the blink of an eyes, from the vastness of the desired to the mystery of the human fate. A cut can bridge millions of years, connecting the past to the imagination future. Editing can slowdown time or speed it up. A choice in length of shot shape the response of everything we see on the screen. Two of the most importand editor in the contribution to the history of editing are Edwin S. Porter and D.W Griffiths.
Edwin S. Porter was an American film pioneer, most famous as a producer, director, studio manager and cinematographer with the Edison Manufacturing Company and the Famous Players Film Company between 1903-1905 he successfully demonstrated most of the techniques that were to become the more common visual aids used to communicate through film. An example of this work is called continuity editing. He is often credited with discovery of the basic syntactic unit of the narrative film, describing it as the "shot" rather than the scene (which is the basic unit of the stage). Instead of using abrupt splices or cuts between shots, Porter created dissolves, which are gradual transition from one image to another.
In his film Life of an American Fireman this technique helped audiences to follow complex outdoor movement. He also used double exposure in the first scene to create the fireman's dream image. In 1903 came what many believe is Porter's masterpiece, The Great Train Robbery. This film was the first American film in which each successive scene moved the story forward, from hold up, to getaway, to chase scene to their capture. Porter's story line was exciting, got the audience involved, and moved them in ways that had never been used before. Including one scene where a gun was pointed directly toward the screen, which frightened many who saw it.
D.W Griffiths was the first film maker to understand the psychological important of editing. Working a decade after Porter, he did than any one else to advance the story telling to what Porter has developed. Griffiths invented a popularise technique that is stabilize the basic grammar of film. He was the first man use the close up to draw audience in to the emotional world of his character.
Griffith began making short films in 1908, and released his first feature, Judith of Bethulia, in 1913. His film The Birth of a Nationmade pioneering use of advanced camera and narrative techniques, and its immense popularity set the stage for the dominance of the feature-length film in the United States. That film not only has close up, but it also has flash back, parallax, it has all of the thing that make the audience’s attetion focused on the certain part of the frame. For his pioneering techniques and early understanding of cinema, Griffith is considered among the most important figures in the history of the medium.
Their works have influenced film making for a long time, most of their editing techniques are still practice today.
